Myanmar’s junta is increasingly using banks in Thailand instead of Singapore for its purchases of military supplies, including arms used against groups opposing its 2021 power grab, according to a United Nations report.

The Republic of Myanmar is one of Southeast Asia’s largest and most diverse countries. Despite this, Myanmar has been devastated by perpetual conflict since the end of World War II.

India has sought “credible security protection for India-funded ongoing projects in Myanmar,” said External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

Thailand has emerged as the leading source of banking services to Myanmar’s military junta, and a key financial conduit for the procurements of arms and other military equipment, as Western sanctions have restricted the junta’s access to the international financial system.

Myanmar's military regime is employing Chinese technology to surveil the internet, a sign that the generals are stepping up efforts to counter widespread resistance to their rule.
