The German state prosecutor in Augsburg has launched a criminal investigation into MAN Energy Solutions, which supplied key components to the UMS Moattama warship, allegedly in violation of Germany’s Foreign Trade Law and European Union Dual Use Regulations.

Justice For Myanmar and Korean Civil Society in Support of Democracy in Myanmar cautiously welcome POSCO C&C’s decision to end their joint venture with military conglomerate Myanma Economic Holdings Limited (MEHL).

South Korean and Myanmar activists are gravely concerned that POSCO has not ended business ties with the Myanmar military that could finance crimes of the most serious nature in Myanmar and call on shareholders and business partners to cut ties with POSCO.

On 10 March 2021, POSCO issued a statement regarding the press conference of Korean Civil Society Organizations and claimed that “the land of the Lotte Hotel in Yangon is owned by the Myanmar government, and because rent payments are made to the Ministry of Treasure in accordance with Article 2 of the Union Budget Law, the military cannot use it arbitrarily.”

Two South Korean civil society coalitions and a Myanmar activist group have filed complaints against five South Korean businesses that have commercial ties with the Myanmar military, which contributes to the international crime of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
